Jungle is often called the lungs of earth and here, in Aktun-Chen, we try to make sure our world breathes freely. Aktun-Chen is a Mayan word that means cave (Aktun) and underground river (Chen). This Yucatan enterprise was founded in 1977 with the idea of showing the beauty of the Mayan jungle not only at the surface, but also underground. We are located in the heart of the Riviera Maya just 20 km North of Tulum ruins. For the most part, it is a 400 acre rainforest preserved in its primeval virginity, with no traces of human interference. We use less than 10% of the extension trying to emphasize the importance of protecting endangered species of Yucatan flora and fauna. In our park, you can still find such animals as the whitetail deer, spider monkey and lowland paca. We hope our ecological initiative will help increase reproduction of rare species in the region.
Zipline
Ever tried zip lining? In Mexico, it is a popular activity that involves getting suspended on a steel cable stretched dozens of feet above the ground and literally flying through the canopy at high speed. Our park features a total of four zip lines, each 25 feet high, connected by a system of secure suspension bridges to move between them. When zip lining, you can see the entire jungle spread out below in full splendor – a rare sight that can’t be compared to anything else.
Limestone cave complex
This 5 million year old cave in the depth of the forest used to be of special importance for Mayan people who gathered here to perform their eerie rituals. You can still feel their presence in these dusky tunnels strewn with magnificent stone sculptures cut by nature itself. Extending for 700 yards underground, the cave ends with a spectacular cenote where you can take a refreshing bath after a tiring walk in the jungle.
Underground river
Aktun-Chen boasts one of the underground rivers Yucatan is famous for. Once a sacred place and the sole source of fresh water for ancient Mayas, it is now a great snorkeling location with fabulous underwater views. The maximal depth of the cenote is only 10 feel, but even if you can’t swim, we’ll make sure you stay afloat wearing a safety belt. Attentive divers might even spot one of the river dwellers lurking between the rocks.
LET THE ADVENTURE BEGIN!
We take great care of our visitors supplying them with everything they need to spend a wonderful vacation in the lap of nature. Before going zip lining or snorkeling in the underwater river, you’ll get precise instructions from a couch and a short training to prevent any accidents. We are also proud to introduce a team of bilingual guides that will show and explain you everything in a secure and comfortable tour. Amazing scenery, plenty of tourist attractions and friendly atmosphere – all this is waiting for you in Aktun-Chen!
